Prices change, and many places only switched from leva to euro in 2026, so treat these as a guide and check on the spot. Ticket prices are for adults; students and pensioners usually pay less. Before you go

Six things that make the day easier.

Yes means no

Bulgarians traditionally nod for “no” and shake their head for “yes”. When in doubt, use words: да (da) is yes, не (ne) is no.

Money

Bulgaria switched to the euro on 1 January 2026. Cards work almost everywhere; keep a few coins for church candles and market stalls.

Shoes

The yellow paving on Tsar Osvoboditel Blvd and the old pavements are uneven and slippery when wet. Wear proper walking shoes.

Churches

Orthodox churches are free to enter. Cover shoulders, keep your voice low and ask before taking photos inside; some charge a small photo fee.

Water

Tap water is safe to drink. The hot-spring taps at stop F are free, so bring a bottle.

Tired legs

Serdika metro station (stops F–G) is the hub. Line M2 runs to NDK station (stop W) if you want to skip a stretch.

Beautiful old buildings on the way

Sofia’s best architecture is spread along the route. These are marked with small squares on the map; tap one to see it.

Beyond the walk

Have a second day? These are outside the centre and worth the trip.
